Il Giardino Ristorante. 910 Atlantic Ave. 422-6464. Food-5; Service-5; Atmosphere-5. Appetizers average $8.75; entrees $12 to $32, averaging $19. Specials almost out-number menu items with a high of $42. Fresh pizzas $10, baked in a wood-burning, open-hearth oven in a corner of the spacious dining room. A varied selection of pastas, chicken, fish, meat, and vegetarian entrees. Their wine list is extensive. Liberal servings of focaccia bread (baked in above-mentioned oven) or their own Italian bread accompany meals. It’s easy to pig out on bread, leaving no room for dessert. That selection is short, but well worth the stomach room. Friendly and efficient waitstaff. Our waiter even offered to take my "doggie bag" to the car. Patio for dining plus piano bar. Free valet parking in rear. Dinner only. Reservations accepted. December 06

Angelo’s. 2809 Atlantic Ave. Colonial Inn. 425-0347. Food 3. Service 3. Atmosphere 4. Large portions for reasonable prices. Mixed bag on food ratings. Sampled house specials very good; one pasta dish needed seasoning; and the house salad, for which you pay extra, was standard iceberg lettuce, onions and cucumbers. Chef's signature dish, chicken Marcela, was tasty but the slabs of meat on the veal Marcela had none of the flavor of the Marcela wine nor of other ingredients often used in the recipe.  Vegetables and pasta were appealing. Large dining areas…inside pleasant…outside covered along the boardwalk. Many menu items. Entrees average $14. House specials $17. Italian specialties $12. Appetizers $6. Children’s menu $5. Lunch specials $6. Breakfast buffet $6. 26 wines. Service was good. Waitress attentive.  Free parking at garage across Atlantic. January

Venice Italian Ristorante and Bar  1516 Atlantic Ave.  757-425-1360   Food-3; Service-3; Atmosphere-3.    Nine appetizers, $4-$8;  entrees are $8-$19, averaging $13; personal pizzas, $6.  A large variety of seafood, veal, and chicken pastas and typical Italian dishes along with fried and fresh seafood and steaks from the broiler.  A good family restaurant as it is easy on the budget.  A quiet atmosphere with soft Italian music in the background and, I must add, a strange mix of decorations that adorn the walls.  Kiddie menu; lunch and dinner; reservations for parties of 5 or more.  Parking on the street or city lots so try the trolley.  August 03

Isle of Capri. 39th & Atlantic. 428-2411. Food-5. Service-4. Atmosphere-5. Sixth floor of the Holiday Inn (independently owned & operated); panoramic view of the oceanfront from most tables and booths. A real Italian restaurant: 14 specialties, mostly veal, from $14 to $25; 12 pasta dishes, average $13; five, 10 inch pizzas, average $9; in addition to eight seafood plates, average $19; and five chicken entries, average $15. Five salads from $3.50 to $11 and appetizers will cost you about $6. Extensive wine list… more than 240 available. BEWARE: everything, including vegetables is a la carte. However the free bread is killer and the specialties come with a side of spaghetti. Relatively small seating and popular, so reservations recommended. Don't come in your bathing suit. Free parking on deck across street. January 04

Zia Marie. 4497 Lookout Rd. 460-0715. Food-5; Service-4; Atmospher-3. Appetizers -$5-$8; soups and salads about $5; entrees average $12, with a range of $9-$20; desserts -$4.  Meals are a la carte and all items are only listed on blackboards so menu and prices could change day to day.  While Zia Marie is off the beaten tourist track, it is well worth the trip.  Our entrees filled the plate and were presented nicely. The stuffed eggplant is highly recommended for vegetarians.  Loaves of bread are served with the meal and replenished as needed.  There is a wine list, but the house cabernet is very good.  Service is efficient and included a friendly chat with the owner.  A fireplace lends some ambiance, but the room was noisy.  Parking is on the premises and on the street.  January 05

La Bella Italia. 1065 Laskin Rd. 422-8536. Food-5; Service-4;  Atmosphere-3   Appetizers average $8; entrees range from $12-$18; pizzas are about $10.Salads extra ($4-$8), but the bread and dipping oil is free.  It would be hard not to find a favorite dish from the large selection of chicken, veal, and pasta entrees, or the 9 Brick Oven Pizzas.  (Suggestion to the Pizza-man: nix the canned mushrooms!)  Don’t forget to check out the desserts that are conveniently on display as you walk in. (Just a warning to dieters.)   Cordials, imported and domestic beers, and of course, wine.  Lunch and dinner.  Parking on the premises. June 05

Aldo's Ristorante. La Promenade Shopping Center. 1860 Laskin Road (31st St. from the oceanfront). 757-491-1111. Food-4; Service-4; Atmosphere-4. This "locals" Italian restaurant is worth your time. Prices are over the resort strip average, but the tastes are worth indulging yourself. Appetizers ($8-$10), soups ($4-$5) and salads ($5-$11). Several of the salads will be more than enough for your meal: chunky chicken salad with focaccia bread and fruit; steak salad; grilled tuna or salmon salads. Pasta dishes ($11-$17). Their 'House Favorites' ($16-$26) might easily become yours with several veal, chicken, steak and seafood offerings. Nightly specials ($22) are numerous and the linguine (loved it) and veal with zucchini and tomato was tasty. Even more so was the side order of sautéed broccoli with roasted garlic and olive oil ($5). One diner thought her seafood entree was just average. There is bar service with a wide selection of wines. Desserts range from ice cream to their Grand Sequoia... a chocolate lover's delight. Very attentive service by our one server. No Smoking. Plenty of parking. March 06

Bella Monte  1201 Laskin Rd., Virginia Beach  757-425-6290    F-2;  S-3;  A-3.  Salads $5-$10, sandwiches, wraps, and pizza $9-$12, entrées $13-$23, averaging $19.  Some vegetarian dishes and $9 “smaller appetites” selections for adults.  Bella Monte’s is half specialty grocery store and half restaurant with a piano bar that is literally part of the bar—people even eat on it!  The large dining room divided by “stone” partitions into more intimate areas was still noisy.  The food was a disappointment.  One meal was cold in the center and the second mostly gristle and fat.  While the third meal was very good, one out of three isn’t passing.  Even though they were graciously reheated or replaced, they shouldn’t have been served that way in the first place.  Lunch and dinner; patio dining; parking on premises; reservations accepted.   Dec. 07

Salvatore’s. 605 Virginia Beach Blvd. 227-6276. F-3; S-3; A-3. Eight Appetizers from $2.25-$8.95; Salads, $3.50-$7.25.  Entrees include pastas, $9.95-$14.95, and steak, chicken and veal entrees which range from $13.95-$21.95, averaging $17.  Also available are subs, burgers, $6-$7, pizzas, calzones and stromboli, $11-$19.   Desserts are about $5.  Wine (bottles under $20), beer and cocktails.   A house salad and unlimited yummy breadsticks are served with entrees.  This was a pleasant dining experience.  Service was with a smile, food was tasty, and the prices manageable. The only recommendation I would offer is to clean up the bathrooms. Lunch and Dinner; reservations accepted; parking on premises.  June 2008

Beach Bella Pizza     616 Va. Bch. Blvd.    437-3663     F-4;  S-4;  A-2. Appetizers, $3-$8; soups and salads, $3-$6; stromboli, pizza, and subs range from $6 (sub) to $22 (large gourmet pizza); pasta dishes, $7-$12.   Menu includes soy veggie pizzas and Kid’s Meals.  We did not try their pizzas but we were impressed with their pasta dinners. Very good and large portions.  A better than ordinary salad (in a bowl, not a flat dish!) and garlic bread come with each pasta entrée.  Service was very friendly and attentive, but then we were their only customers.  Hopefully that will change.  To sum up: decent prices for a better than decent meal.  Plenty of on-site parking; Lunch and Dinner.  Sept 08
